The Efficiency of Wiping Tools in Media Sanitization

Abstract

Media sanitization is a process of wiping all data from storage media. This process is to
ensure that all data cannot be recovered. This study examines the level of efficiency of
four data wiping tools namely Tableau Forensic Imager Model TD3, NINJA Y-1659,
Data Hapus and VOOM Hardcopy 3P. The media storage used for these experiments
are USB 2.0 flash drive, USB 3.0 flash drive, SATA and IDE/PATA hard disks. Our
experimental results found that Tableau Forensic Imager Model TD3 and Data Hapus
were compatible for wiping all storage media types. The comparison between wiping
tools found that media sanitization using Data Hapus is the highest ranking position
compared to Tableau TD3, NINJA Y-1659 and VOOM Hardcopy 3P.
