ASEAN WORKSHOP ON INFORMATION SCIENCE AND AWIST2021 RTD was conducted online at UKM on 6 August 2021. It has focused on ‘joint grant’ application by making
TECHNOLOGY ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION Sumitomo grant as a case study. It was discovered that there are only 5% from the successful 2020 Sumitomo grant
was from the computing topic. Therefore, there is a knowledge sharing session by Dr. Lam Meng Chun from UKM, the
recipient of 2020 Sumitomo grant. He has shared his experience and tips in Sumitomo grant application. This is followed

Huda Sheikh Abdullah from UKM, and Professor Dr. Nursuriati Jamil from UiTM. The presentation session aim to find

collaborator and to get feedback on the grant idea. As a resolution, AWIST member aim to submit a joint-grant application
INTR ODUC TION for 2021 Sumitomo which will is open from 1 September to 31 October 2021, and encouraging collaborators from AWIST
network. In addition, activities such as joint writing workshop and postgraduate seminar were proposed too. Finally the
ASEAN Workshop on Information Science and Technology (AWIST) is an annual workshop co-organized by the Universiti announcement of AWIST2021 which will be organized by JAIST.
Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Universitas Komputer
Indonesia (UNIKOM), and the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). It is part of collaboration activities in various branches
of Science and Technology to strengthen research partnership.

R OUND TABLE DISCUSSION

Round table discussion (RTD) is an event conducted after AWIST workshop to strengthen collaboration by discussing a
specific topic or join activity, and finally to determine the next host for AWIST.

AWIST2020 RTD was conducted online on 3rd December 2020 and organized by UiTM. We reviewed the performance
of the collaboration by examining the indicators such as number of (a) joint article publication, (b) joint grant, (c) joint
activities and, (d) joint supervision. Analysis indicate that ‘joint activities’ was the highest indicator from 2011 to 2020.
The highest number of ‘joint activities’ are in 2015 with 7 activities under student internship program, 1 postdoctoral or
sabbatical program, 6 research visit or attachment program, 1 short course, and 3 workshops conducted. A total of 18
‘joint activities’ in 2015 shows a positive indicator in collaboration. Meanwhile ‘joint publication’ was the second highest
indicator with the highest number of 6 joint publications have been produced in 2015. Surprisingly there is no indicator on
‘joint grant’ application. This has motivates AWIST member with a resolution to focus on ‘joint grant’ application involving
representatives and researchers from each institution. It will be presented in AWIST2021 RTD. Finally the announcement
of AWIST2021 which will be organized by UKM.
